As well as the start of the New Year, this is of course the start of a new decade! How would you feel if this year and this decade, are your best yet? The great news is that with some focused effort they can be.
Most people who invest in property that I speak to, do so for two main reasons, 1) To build a pension for their future, 2) to improve their lifestyle, often by replacing their earned income with a passive cash flow from rental profits. Once you know what to do, property investing is actually very simple. It is NOT EASY, as this suggests there is no work. There is definitely some time and effort required but it can be very straight forward.
Unfortunately I often see people “dabble” with property investing and then give up when they don’t get the results they want straight away. We need to remember that property investing is a long term wealth creation strategy. Yes you can quickly buy property that creates a healthy cash flow now but let’s be honest we are going to have to wait a few years to see good capital growth. That is no reason not to take action now.
Last month I attended an intensive six day seminar with Tony Robbins in Palm Springs and one of his sayings which he reminded me of was “Most people over estimate what they can do in a year and dramatically underestimate what they can achieve in 10 years!” This is so true. It is amazing how much we can achieve in a decade. Just think about what your life was like 10 years ago at the beginning of the year 2000? Mine was totally different from the life I have now. I had a few houses by then and I was still working in full time employment for Cadbury Ltd in Birmingham, as well as running a business in my spare time. I now no longer have to work and consider myself very fortunate to be able to follow my life passion which is to speak about and share my 15 years of investing experience.
The sad fact is that some people reading this magazine just won’t take the necessary action to change their lives for the better. Life will get in their way and they will have any number of excuses why they could not do it. Life for them will be exactly the same in 10 years. They will be doing the same things as they are now but probably just more frustrated and tired.
Whereas the truth is that it all starts with you making a decision. Your decisions shape your destiny. I wonder what would happen if you were to put a stake in the ground now and make a commitment today to achieving your personal property investment goals. What could your life be like 10 years from now?
The next few years will be a great time to invest in property, as long as you know what you are doing, and adhere to my 5 golden rules for investing in property as described in my book “Property Magic”. We could see a second dip this year, who knows! Who cares? With the current market uncertainty the vast majority of the general public are not investing now which is why it is such a good opportunity for educated investors like us to make the most of this fantastic buying opportunity.
As I said earlier in this blog, it all starts with you making a decision. A decision to live the life you desire and deserve. If property is your chosen vehicle to financial independence, isn’t it about time you take off the learner plate and learn to drive properly. Every year I meet so many investors who say they want to be financially independent and yet they fail to take the necessary steps.
One of the challenges that many people face is that this compelling image of their future can be so different from the reality of today that many people get overwhelmed by the enormity of the task ahead of them and so fail to start taking action. If this has been the situation for you in the past then a book that I would highly recommend is the “Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson or even better “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy the audio version of which is so good that I have gave to all of my Property Mastermind delegates for Christmas . The essence of these two fantastic publications is that to be successful you have to do something to move towards your goals every single day. On their own theses small steps may seem insignificant but added together you get this incredible compounding effect.
Are you up for the challenge? Do you want to make this an outstanding year? If you really want to make a commitment to your personal success I recommend you book to attend your local January property investors network meeting now. There are now 11 of them each month around the UK. For details of a pin meeting near where you live check this website: www.pinmeeting.co.uk. The theme for this month’s pin meetings is “How to make 2011 your best year yet”
Wishing you the very best for 2011 and the rest of this decade!
